Hospital Sultanah Malihah, Langkawi

Hospital Sultanah Maliha is currently the first LEEDv4 O&M Gold Certified Hospital in the world and first LEED certified government hospital in Malaysia. As a district hospital in Langkawi, Kedah, the hospital has been operational since 1995 and is owned by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MoH). As a pilot case study on sustainable hospitals in Malaysia, the LEED Certification for the hospital was pursued by a collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the hospital operator – UEM Edgenta Berhad.

In addition to its LEED Certification, Hospital Sultanah Maliha is also an active participant in the Asean Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS), attaining an Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) certification which symbolizes continuous energy efficiency best management practices and optimization efforts.

Innovative Sustainability Features

An energy star rating of 100 is achieved, making the hospital a top performer under the Energy Star Portfolio Manager with an Energy Utilization Index (EUI) of 3.84GJ/m² compared to the national median EUI of 5.3GJ/m2.
Optimized natural ventilation by well shaded façade designs and sufficient openings that provide comfortable air flow (accompanied by ceiling and wall mounted fans) all year round, resulting in 73% of naturally ventilated areas.
PV Panels are installed to generate 1.75% of the annual energy consumption for the building.
Digital Power Meters for tracking and monitoring of energy consumption.
A 1,200m3 on-site retention pond allows infiltration of rainwater, significantly reducing run-off from the site.
90% of lights installed in the hospital are mercury free LED lights.
