Xiong'An Rong Cheng Port Apartment
Regeneration of a plot of about 10,000 m2 with existing buildings, located in the district of Xiong'An (about 2 hours by car from Beijing). The project was a model scheme for future regeneration of other plots in Xiong'An that is a district proposed to be the new administration centre for Beijing.
The client hired Dato' Dr. Ar. Ken Yeang (TR Hamzah Yeang Sdn Bhd), whose scope of work involved doing the masterplan for the plot. Ken Yeang's approach was demonstrate green, sustainable designs that could be instructively replicable for other plots in the locality. Besides the masterplan and the landscape design, the project included the renovation of an existing 5-storey building, which was designed to be an iconic show-case project for that district, which simulation and design assistance from IEN Consultants. Our job was to simulate and optimise the sustainable design features of this show-case building. The design included a number of internal flues to function as natural-ventilation devices to cool the building and to make it low-energy especially during the mid-seasons (spring and autumn). We used CFD simulation to evaluate and optimise the design performance of these natural-ventilation systems.
Innovative Sustainability Features
1) Optimise the internal thermal flues for solar energy / daylight / natural ventilation
2) Optimise the natural induced air-flows throughout the building, including for the apartments and for the basement shared-office space
3) Specify smart controls allowing the building to work with the climate for most the year, hence, reducing the annual energy consumption
4) Use of aerodynamic highly efficient ceiling fans
5) Use of energy recovery systems
