Watch the presentation of the pioneering super energy efficient and zero energy COOLTEK House in Melaka, Malaysia. The house design was conceptualised by Stephanie Bacon and her late husband, Harry Boswell, when they moved from the UK to retire in tropical Malaysia. Video link:
With admirable tenacity, Stephanie and Harry set out to design and build a 24-hour air-conditioned house that employed all the principles of designing according to the tropical climate. They also incorporated an innovative sub-soil ground cooling system, which required a minor adjustment (refer to discussion 21 minutes into the above video). The COOLTEK house was probably the first air-conditioned house be become ZERO energy, as it was a very early adopter of solar photovoltaics (year 2007) and four years later became the first residential house to be incorporated under the solar photovoltaic roof Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) scheme by the national power utility, TNB.
