IEN was invited to give a talk about building energy benchmarking and how it is becoming more common-place in Malaysia. The talk was well attended and enjoyed lots of interest among the almost registered 50 attendees with plenty of questions afterwards.
Gregers (IEN) began by addressing what motivates people to take notice of building energy benchmarking values. Interestingly, for private homes, the biggest motivating factor for people to take action, is when they learn that their neighbour has a lower energy bill.

The building sector has the biggest and cheapest energy saving potential, and building metering and sub-metering will play a key role in determining where the energy wastage is taking place. In IEN's presentation, the following topics were addressed:
Why Building Energy Benchmarking?
Why Building Energy Sub-metering?
How to make it Energy Benchmarking effective?
a) Voluntary
b) Mandatory
Overseas experience a) Mandatory energy labeling of buildings (EU) b) Building Energy Data Repository (Singapore)
Building Energy Benchmarking in Malaysia
a) Green building rating tool databases
b) Hospitals (MoH study incl. published paper)
c) National BEI Programme
Case Studies of Energy Efficient Building Retrofits
