National Building Energy Intensity (BEI) Benchmarking Project

IEN is delighted to serve in the "technical expert working group" for the National Building Energy Intensity (BEI) project. A key outcome of this 1-year project is to establish reliable energy benchmarks for six different building types 1) Offices 2) Educational Institutional offices 3) Healthcare (private hospitals) 4) Hotels 5) Retail and 6) Data centers.

6 building categories for energy benchmarking

The energy benchmarks must be based on a representative sample of energy consumption data from buildings throughout Malaysia. The official project webpage (https://my-bei.com.my/) invites Malaysian building owners to submit and share their building data:

The building energy benchmarks will form the basis for establishing the 5-star building energy rating for each of the six building categories. See example below of the 5-star building energy intensity (BEI) label used for Malaysian government buildings:

Purpose

The 5-star building energy label will likely be used to determine what buildings - based on their star rating - need to undergo energy audits / energy retrofits. The building sector offers the biggest 'lowest hanging fruits' with respect to energy savings and greenhouse gas reductions. In this light, this national building energy benchmarking initiative serves an important first step in a concerted effort to identifying the lowest hanging fruits for the economic benefit of the public, as well as contributing to Malaysia's overriding climate goal of becoming a carbon neutral nation by 2050.
